WANT
TO HELP IN THE CAMPAIGN?
Here are a few things you can do:
1.
Display
Posters. You can
take some of the campaign posters to display in the lawn in front of you home,
at the neighbor’s lawns, on the streets, on the walls where there’re lots of
people or traffic passing by. You can also hand these posters of places of
business. Displaying these early and properly is very important in introducing
the candidate to the voters and making the name more familiar or recognizable
to the voters. Sometime name recognition is an important factor in making the
difference.
2.
Distribute
Brochures and Flyers.
You can distribute these documents to your family members, neighbors, friends
at work or school, or anyone you know.
You can also get these documents from the web site at www.LanNguyen.com and forward to your
friends on the Internet. These documents are a good device to introduce the
candidate to the people that you know. Very often, people vote for the
candidate just because they know or trust you. People also forward the
information to others which makes your work even more effective.
3.
Introduce
the Candidate to the Voters.
If you know some large groups of voters or where there are potentially large
number of voters like apartment complexes, churches, temples, neighborhood
meetings, schools, businesses, etc., please make arrangement to introduce the
Candidate to these voters. With your introduction or arrangement, the Candidate
can be more welcome or receptive to the voters. Of course, it would be much
easier to break the ice or get their votes.
4.
Register
People to Voter.
Part of the campaign is to register people to vote. New voters will almost
certainly vote for the candidate by whom they were registered. Registering new
voters will certainly enhance the political influence of the voter group you’re
working with. Most of new voters would vote only for the people that they know
and no one else.
5.
Fill
out application for absentee ballots.
These applications are very simple to fill out. They require mostly the
applicant’s name, address and correct signature. This voting method has
increasingly become important for Vietnamese-American voters because it’s a
good way to beat the inconvenience of voting on the Election Day. Many elder
voters may need a comfortable environment where their children can help in the
voting process. It’s also a good way to encourage people to vote because they
don’t have to come to the polling place to vote on the Election Day. Like voter
registration, people tend to vote for the candidate who sent them the form or
assisted them filling out the form for the absentee ballots.
6.
Work
the Phone Bank.
You can call registered voters in the District to remind them to vote or ask
them if we can help them in any way. You can call from the Campaign Office or
from your own home. You can select your
own hours or days of week, but it must
be before the Election Date on November 2 of this year. We’ll provide all
necessary instructions, phone scripts, list of voters’ names and their phone
numbers. You can use either English, Spanish or Vietnamese. You can ask a group
of friends to get together at someone’s house to make the calls from there.
It’s important that we reach out to the voters to see if they need any help or listen
to their concerns about this election.
7.
Walk
the precincts. You can walk around certain streets or
neighborhoods within the District to meet the residents, introduce the
Candidate Lan Nguyen to them, pass out campaign literature, ask them about
their concerns for the election or any thing that we can do to help them for
this election. You can pick your own times or your own routes to walk, but the
best time to meet residents is usually in the afternoons after work time. Like
working on the phone bank, we need to reach out to the resident voters to
encourage them to vote and to hear what they have to say about the election.
8.
Work
at the Campaign Office. You can work in the campaign office, answer
the phones, help in administrative tasks, enter data into the computers, or
anything else that is needed for the campaign.
You can also pick your own time schedule or coordinate with other
volunteers at the office.
9.
Ask
others to help. If you have relatives, friends or know
someone who lives in within the boundary of the District, you can contact those
people and ask them to do any of the above or any of the following: (1)
remember to vote on the Election Day, (2) ask their family members and
neighbors to vote also, (3) allow the campaign to post the campaign signs on
their lawns, (4) introduce the candidate Lan Nguyen to their neighbors around
their home, or (5) ask them to make a donation to the campaign if possible.
10. Make a Donation. Campaigning for this position
is not easy as it seems. We need to reach out to almost 120,000 voters and
raise at least $50,000 to pay for the basis costs of the campaign. Each mailer that we send out to the voters
costs from $15,000 to $20,000, and we must send out at least three of those
mailers just to get enough attention. The
rest of the campaign depends a lot on manual work such as working on the phone
bank or walking the precincts.
